GET THERE FASTER

FIRST ABOUT TOOLS

In OA, we have tools that help us as we work the Steps. Remember to use these tools every week to support you on this journey. These tools will help keep you engaged when things get rough. Also, your use of the tools will help others stay engaged.

  • Meet with (phone, video, or in person) your Step Study guide, partner, or sponsor (recommended to schedule ahead of time)

  • Attend at least 2 meetings this week. You can find meetings by visiting www.oaunity.org/meetings or https://oa.org/find-a-meeting/?type=0

  • Make at least 2 phone calls every day

    • you may have to leave a message – that’s o.k.

  • Post on the text line at least 2 times this week (To be added to Whatsapp textline, text Becca D at (615) 496-9801 and give your first name, last initial, and phone number. Be sure to download Whatsapp to your phone.)

1) Post something about the step study

2) Post a response to someone else’s post

  • Be of service this week (Remember that service works when all else fails to keep us abstinent!)

    • do something for someone else

    • accept a service commitment for the Step Study

    • or be of service in some other way

  • Write or journal at least 2 times this week

STEP STUDY ASSIGNMENTS - SUGGESTED SCHEDULE

Below you will find a suggested schedule for completing this weeks Step Study assignments. Each day USUALLY includes about 30 minutes of reading or writing and 30 minutes of listening to a recording of a recovering members experience, strength, and hope on this Step. Assignments are suggested for 6 days with the 7th day being a day of rest or catching up if you fell behind.

1. Day One:

  • For each packet that lists people, institutions, or principles you resent, fill out “The causes” (Column 2). Keep the causes column to 19 words or less (if possible) and utilize bullet points for multiple items.

2. Day Two:

  • ™ Fill out “Affects my” (Column 3) by checking which of your instincts are affected for each resentment.

3. Day Three:

  • Print out the Prayer Sheet below.

  • For each resentment, say the resentment prayer or the offended prayer in a way that works for you.

4. Day Four:

  • Read the following quote:

Referring to our list again. Putting out of our minds the wrongs others had done, we resolutely looked for our own mistakes. Where had we been selfish, dishonest, self-seeking and frightened? Though a situation had not been entirely our fault, we tried to disregard the other person involved entirely. Where were we to blame? The inventory was ours, not the other man’s. (Big Book, page 67)

  • Turn to the Character Defect Sheet (CDS) attached to each resentment. Use a highlighter to emphasize phrases that show how you have been selfish, dishonest, inconsiderate, etc. To further explain your part, add detailed notes. See this example of a completed CDS and read the examples bulleted below that may assist you as you complete your own CDS.

· Selfish – I want special treatment – “I want GOD to play favorites and do my will.”

· Dishonest – Setting myself up to be harmed/wronged by telling myself things that aren’t true… “My husband/wife is responsible for my security and s/he needs to take care of me.” The truth is… “My higher power alone is the source of my security.”

- Dishonest – I made it mean… “Money is the source is the source of my security.” The truth is…”GOD is the source of my only true security, that never changes and GOD is always there for me.”

· Inconsiderate – Have I considered that… (ask to see the situation/person more like your HP sees it/them) “My husband’s higher power is not worried about his health or his future. If my husband's higher power is not worried maybe I don’t need to be as worried either.”

· Inconsiderate – Have I considered that…(ask to see the situation/person more like your HP sees it/them). “She is suffering more than I am aware and I can have compassion and see that she is suffering.”

5. Day Five:

  • Continue the work from Day 4 until you have completed a list of your CD for each resentment

6. Day Six:

  • Review all of your resentments and for each one that has an associated fear, write FEAR next to it.

Be sure to talk about your work so far on Step 4 with your sponsor, Step working partner, or guide. You will continue to work on your resentments next week.
